Update! [Feb. 8th, 2008|12:15 pm]
[mood | accomplished]
[music |You Told Me-The Monkees-Headquarters]

Hello! Long time no write! I just wanted to give y'all a quick update on my diet status. I'm still on the diet and I still haven't cheated! Yay! I weathered the holidays quite well--we went camping to escape Thanksgiving which totally worked out except for it being freezing cold. After one night I found the only Wal-Mart in CA gold country and bought an electric blanket. Christmas was a bit of a challenge, but I just made sure to have a lot of my stuff with me and I was okay.

As of this week, I've lost a total of 80 lbs. Huzzah! In the last couple of weeks people at work have really started noticing and saying something. I guess maybe they've decided that I don't have some dread illness and that it's okay to speak up? I dunno. Sometimes I find the attention a bit embarrassing as I'm not really the most comfortable with people looking at me, but whatever. I'll deal. People have been pestering me for pics, so here's one hot off the presses, taken this morning on the volleyball court here at work by [info]mrmouse. I'll try and be better about updating. :)

[music |The Leave Taking-Howard Shore-The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers [Limited Edition]]

Hello! So as Britta pointed out to me, it's been a very long time since I've updated my LJ. I've been really busy the last few weeks with work and holiday stuff, so I haven't reallly had the time or inclination to update this little thing.

I'm still on my diet and I've lost 64 lbs so far. Woot for me! I think I'm finally at the point where I can see some difference in my face. It's so hard to tell when you look at yourself every day.

Anyway, that's about it for now. Have a great holiday season!

Hi everybody! It seems my body likes the number 3 because I am down another 3 lbs this week for a total of 33. I am very pleased by my progress so far. I do have to admit that I have been having indecent thoughts of peas, lima beans and corn. My wedding ring is totally loose and my titanium ring is getting very loose too. I will be very sad when I have to say goodbye to it. Sadly, it is made from bar stock and I don't think Ti can be resized. It was pretty expensive when I got it and I'm on the fence about replacing it.

Anyway, I'm shrinking! Woot!

Progress [Aug. 1st, 2007|10:43 pm]
[mood | thoughtful]
[music |Sunday Morning-Maroon 5-Songs About Jane]

As of this week I have lost a total of 25 pounds! Yay! I am very pleased with my progress so far, but boy do I have a long row to hoe. I ran across a BMI calculator today and I found that 150 lbs is at the high end of normal for my height, 5' 6.5". 150 seems amazingly little to me at this point, but it's still at the high end. Right now, I feel like it's going to take forever for me to reach any kind of reasonable goal, but I'll keep my spirits up and focus on my progress so far. 25 lbs is certainly nothing to sneeze at, after all.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I will be 34 years old. Ten years ago tomorrow, John asked me to marry him. One year ago I was in New York, hanging with Aymee and supremely excited about seeing Stephen King, JKR and John Irving. 16 years ago I turned 18 and that is just amazing to me. I remember I got a realy good set of crayons and coloring books for that birthday.

I will be working tomorrow--I usually try and take the day off, but having it on a Thursday kind of kills the vibe. I'm sort of expecting my mom and dad to come up this weekend, but I likely won't know until tomorrow. If they don't come up, maybe John and I will go to Great America.

Anyways, 25 lbs! Woot!

What's going on? [Jul. 29th, 2007|08:14 pm]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |December-Collective Soul-Collective Soul]

I haven't updated my diet progress in a bit. Last week I was down 4 lbs for a total of 21! Go me! I am really pleased by my progress so far and I hope I can keep it up. I'm dreading the first week I don't go down. Sooner or later, everyone hits a plateau. For now tho, I'm keeping positive and focusing on only one week at a time.

Everyone wants to do something a little out of the ordinary when they meet a goal and I've been thinking of 2 options for when I reach my weight-loss goal: a tattoo or piercing my nose. Opinions?

I want to say congratulations to my friend Melanie. She has been in training for months and today she finished the San Francisco Marathon, traveling 26.2 miles in six hours and change. Along the way, she raised over $7000 for AIDS research. I went with Ben to watch her cross the finish line and I am just so proud of her.

We got our iPhones at work and I'm pretty pleased by it. It has some quirks and 2.5G Edge is not the fastest, but overall it's very cool.

I finished Deathly Hallows after staying up all night Friday, finishing it around 11 Saturday morning. No spoilers, but I will say that it was awesome. I am currently listening to it on audio in the car. Jim Dale rules.

Anyway, that's all I've got. Later!

Stuff! [Jul. 18th, 2007|11:22 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Over My Shoulder-Mika-Life In Cartoon Motion]

Hello! How is everyone doing? I'm doing quite well, thanks! Eagerly anticipating the acquisition of HP and the Deathly Hallows and avoiding anything that smells remotely like a spoiler. It seemed like just yesterday I was griping about how the book would never get here and I'll have it in my hot little hands in a couple of days. I still have to iron on the Ravenclaw patch on my robes. I'm totally going to wear my outift to work on Friday. I wore my Quidditch getup for HBP, so I guess it's tradition now.

My weight loss program is continuing to go great. I didn't post last week, but I was down 12 lbs last Wednesday. This Wednesday I was down another 5 for a total of 17! John and I went roller skating last Sunday, which I think helped a lot. The Cal Skate here in Milpitas has an adult session on Sunday from 8 to 10. They also do "adult instruction" from 7:30 to 8. We had a good time, even though John fell a couple of times and hurt his wrist. I managed to skate around for an hour and a half which was cool, but kind of a bummer compared to how I used to be able to skate for a whole 3 or 4 hour session. I did the regular quad skates, but I think I might try inline next time. So, if you're local, come on down Sunday for mad skating fun!

I hope to be able to go skating Sunday. I'll have to seriously tear myself away from the new HP book to do it. Saturday is shaping up to be a busy day. In additon to [info]brittadotcom's Potter party, we have a BBQ to at least make an appearance at. If I don't finish the book by 8 on Sunday, I'll have to skip skating for the week. A girl's got to have priorities, you know.

Oh! In other news, I got my 5 year plaque from Apple on Monday. July 15 was my official 5 year anniversary. Counting contractor time, I've been rattling around the Infinite Loop over 6 years. I think that's the longest I've ever worked anywhere. The plaque looks very nice on my wall. Perhaps I'll share a snap of it.

See you guys later!

Tasty Goodness! [Jul. 10th, 2007|01:13 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Radio GA GA-Queen-Queen Greatest Hits II]

Okay, so on this diet, what I eat consists of HMR shakes, HMR chicken soup or HMR entrees. When you start the diet, you get a recipe book. I know--a recipe book for chocolate and vanilla shakes? WTF? A lot of the shake recipes call for adding a tablespoon of sugar/fat free instant pudding mix, so yesterday after work I went by Safeway and picked up a variety. I got lemon, banana, chocolate fudge, pistachio, something else I can't remember and...cheesecake.

So for dinner last night, I had a chocolate shake with a tablespoon of the cheesecake pudding mix. It was so good, I felt like I was doing something wrong. The texture was velvety smooth and the tang of the cheesecake was just right.

The other thing I found at the store? Concentrated coffe. Brewed coffee in a bottle with a little measuring cup on top. You can mix it in with hot or cold water and there you go--coffee. I had never heard of such a thing, but I tried it this morning with my breakfast and it was really good.

I have class tomorrow and since my last class was on Monday, I've had a longer time between weigh-ins, so I'm hoping for a really good result. Woot!

I did good! [Jul. 8th, 2007|11:57 pm]
[mood | tired]
[music |It's My Life-No Doubt-It's My Life - Single]

I did good this weekend at my parents' place and didn't cheat all. It's tough at Mom and Dad's because they have all sorts of snacky things around and a garage freezer crammed full of all sorts of delights. I stuck to my regimen though, managing to stay "in the box" as they say.

My mom is weird. Just ask Ben and he will verify her weirdness, probably with a direct quote of, " Well what do you want me to say?" Back when they visited the weekend before Father's day, I told them that I was going to do the diet and they were both really supportive, Mom saying, "Well, you've got to start somewhere." So Saturday I'm there in their kitchen putting together my lunchtime shake and Mom is asking me questions, which is fine. I am quite patient and answer her questions and she finally concludes with this: "Oh. That's a liquid diet. People die on those."

Wow. Thanks, Mom! Never mind the fact that I am being supported by a team of people that make sure that doesn't happen.

I think next time I go down there I am going to have to bring some entrees with me. I didn't this time, just the shake stuff and I was really jealous when Mom, Dad and John were sitting down to steaks, rice pilaf and corn on the cob. It would have been nice to actually have something to chew instead of just drinking down a large mug of HMR chicken soup. Still, the soup filled me up and once I was full I stopped having indecent thoughts of a large, freshly barbecued piece of meat on a bed of rice along with a fresh ear of corn twirled until it was dizzy in butter. Mostly stopped...

The slacks I bought today for the HP costume are a size smaller. Yippee! But I still can't wear those damn Eddie Bauer jeans! They're going to fit in the thigh and be too loose in the waist, I can see it now. I can also see that I'm still going to have a gigantic ass, no matter how thin I get.

Costume! [Jul. 8th, 2007|11:07 pm]
[mood | excited]
[music |It's My Life-No Doubt-It's My Life - Single]

Woot! My best friend Carrie, maker of the Quidditch robes, came through again for my Ravenclaw house robes! I bought the materials for the robe, oh, back in March or April and Carrie had been periodically bugging me for arm length and shoulder measurements for ages and I had been putting it off. Driving home Monday night, I realized the the movie was coming out in the next week and then the book was the week after, leaving this the only free non-Potter weekend. Yikes! So I headed down to Fresno and sort of helped Carrie put together the robes. My part was mostly surfing the web, yakking, petting cats and children and standing on a chair for hem measurements.

Carrie finished them this afternoon and they are awesome! I had found a really nice black egyptian cotton for the outside and a beautiful blue satin for the lining. The whole thing is lined, including the sleeves and inside of the hood. It's the same pattern as my Quidditch outfit except for the different sleeves. I found some really cool Celtic-looking antiqued silver frog clasps for the front, but we have found that they have to be supplimented by hook and eye closures underneath.

I found suitable slacks (I know, girl students wear skirts, but I am not a skirt person, so I guess I'm in drag!) and a great tie. I dunno why the movie outfits have them with blue and silver since the house colors are clearly blue and BRONZE. As soon as we got home I put the whole ensemble on and OMG is it HOT. I am going to melt. But hey! It's for a good cause, yeah? If your cause is looking like an HP fangirl, that is!

Anyways, here's a pic. Sorry for the poor quality, but my camera was running out a battery and didn't have the oomph for a flash. Better pics to follow. Now I need to get a wand...

[music |It's My Life-No Doubt-It's My Life - Single]

Work is really sucking right now. I've been here late (like 11 o'clock late) every night since Friday, including Saturday and Sunday. I will probably also have to work tomorrow (Sorry Britta!). Hopefully this fire drill will end soon and life can get back to normal.

On the up side, I had a weigh-in yesterday and I was down 2#. Not bad for a short week as my class is normally on Wednesday, but there is no class this week because of the fourth. This bring the total to 9. I'm a bit bummed to miss the 10# mark, but I'm sure that if I'd had the whole week I could have done it. Ah well, next Wednesday should be good because of the longer time between weigh ins.

Dear person that left a tiramisu in the break room,

Die in a fire.

No love, me

Ha! I kid! I wasn't actually all that tempted by the half-gnawed on tiramisu, but it did bring back memories of tiramisu tastiness. As I was in there mixing up my shake a couple of folks swooped in and took pieces. I was really glad they ignored me and didn't ask why I wasn't having any.

First Week Down! [Jun. 27th, 2007|10:31 pm]
[mood | accomplished]

So, I have completed my first week on the HMR plan! I am down 7 pounds and I successfully stayed "in the box", meaning I did not have any outside food. So far I haven't felt like cheating. My stomach has been a bit rumbly and distressed, so I picked up some Lactaid. I've never had a problem with milk products before, but everyone says that this program can bring out any latent lactose intolerance that may have been lurking below the surface.

I have to confess that I was kind of bummed about the 7 pounds--I'd been hoping for more and some people in the class went down 13! But 7 is still way awesome and I am pleased. Except for the week I spent in the UK walking everywhere, that's the most I've lost in a week.

I weigh in next on Monday as Wednesday is the Fourth of July. Stay tuned!

[music |Lovely Rita-The Beatles-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band]

Hi, everybody!

I haven't posted in quite a while. Nothing really too exciting has been going on lately. Mostly work and WoW. I have been partaking of the summer movies--this year has a bumper crop.

One thing that is new is that I am on a diet. If you've met me, you know I need one! I'd been doing Weight Watchers for the last few years and I'd pretty much stopped making progress on it and I was losing hope of ever reaching any sort of reasonable weight. One of my co-workers had gone on the HMR diet and had amazing success with it, so I am now on that program myself. It's pretty hardcore in that I have to attend a weekly class, have medical supervision including a blood draw every 2 weeks and I can eat food only on the HMR program which consists of shakes and entrees. It will be a challenge, but I have a good support system in my friends and the program is geared for fast results, something I am very much looking forward to.

I'll try to keep y'all posted on progress! :)

Hello! [Aug. 23rd, 2006|07:21 pm]
[mood | curious]

Hello!

It's after 7 and I'm still at work. How are you?

John and I went to Target to get swag for our trailer. We found the awesome kitchen-in-a-box that had pretty much everything we needed. We are taking the dog to his neurology consultation in Berkeley and then we are camping in...get this...Candlestick RV Park! It looks very...paved, but all of the other nearby parks were full. At least this way if anything tragic happens we're close to civilization. I'm really excited about going somewhere in the trailer for the first time.

I have a question--do you have a favorite swear? Mine seems to be "bitch-ass whore" of late. I don't know where that one came from. Maybe [info]mrmouse? I am also partial to a satisfying "son of a bitch". What's yours?

Weekend Things [Aug. 21st, 2006|09:11 pm]
[mood | bored]

Mmmm...Monday...

Actually. Yuck! Monday!

I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine wasn't too bad. John went down to LA to visit his mom and since I dislike being home alone, I zipped down to Fresno to visit my folks. I had to distribute New York gifties, after all. My mom was delighted with her porcelain Tiffany box...inside a Tiffany box. Did totally dug his subway token money clip.

My paternal grandparents are in a skilled nursing facility these days. My grandpa's 100 years old and has had both legs amputated above the knee due to diabetes and poor circulation and my parents can't trust my grandma to stay in the house by herself without burning it down, so they're both in a nice place down the road from their condo. It's like five minutes from my parents too, so it's pretty cool. My uncle Bob had been living with them, but he has recently moved back to Colorado to stay with one of his daughters who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

So, Mom and Dad are going to rent the place out, furnished. What they had been doing was going through Grandma and Grandpa's things and taking home some things that they didn't want to see get lost or destroyed. I helped them out some on Saturday, but they had already gotten most of it. I spent a lot of time looking through all sorts of old pictures. Tons of school pictures of my dad and lots of pictures of Grandma, Grandpa and various other relatives in the 30s and 40s. Some of them looked like those old spooky Civil War-era pictures where everyone has these white, staring eyes. I was really bummed that almost none of the pictures had any notes on the back, so we didn't have any idea who a lot of the people were.

My dad was a late baby and I've always known Grandma and Grandpa as old--I'd never seen pictures of them young unitl this weekend. My Grandpa had really dark hair. We went to visit them in the nursing facility and my Grandpa is so thin--it's like he's being boiled down to "essence of Grandpa". He's always been a picky eater and he doesn't have much appetite. Still, he knew who we were and it was good to see them. Grandma and Grandpa have been married for 72 years! Holy cow! She married him when she was 17 and he was 29. I think. Somehow, that math isn't working out in my head.

Anyway, it was a good visit, but I was glad to get home!

Trailer! [Aug. 15th, 2006|11:30 pm]
[mood | sleepy]

Yay! Trailer! Finally!

Trailer, you say? Yes! A teeny travel trailer. One of these guys. I like to camp, but I don't like to tent camp. [info]mrmouse says that it's not real camping unless it's in a tent, but I say nuts to that. Our teeny trailer is tall enough to stand up in, has bench-style seating that converts to a bed and a stove, sink, counterspace and electrical outlets in back. We got a red and white clamshell model.

We ordered this thing on April 15 and we just got it last Saturday. What an ordeal that was. The only dealer in these parts for these little guys is in Rancho Cordova, waay over by Sacramento. I wanted them to put the hitch on my car because they knew exactly what we were hooking up to. I'd made the arrangements the previous week when we were in New York, on the train to [info]harrysmom's house. So, we show up at 9 am like we were supposed to and we were greeted with long faces. It seems that they were having trouble finding a hitch for a Subaru Outback. In fact, they still didn't have one when we showed up. The guy explained that he had a call in to one of this competitors (apparently U-Haul) to see if they had one. Huzzah, they did! One of the guys was dispatched to pick up the hitch and apparently the place was in Milpitas because it took forever.

While we were waiting for dude to come back with the hitch, we did the walkthrough on the trailer and a really nice guy (Jesse?) showed us all of the little things on it. They had filled the propane tank and the five gallon water tank and everything. We looked in all the storage places and checked out where the battery is and all that. I guess part of the reason why it took so long is that we requested a bit of customization. Normally in that model there's a bench with storage between the closet and the door, but we asked for it to be built without that so we have a place for Gus. After the walkthrough, we signed all of the financials and put ourselves in debt for the first time in two years.

After the walkthrough, the guy had come back with the hitch, so we were given the use of a mammoth diesel Ford F250 to tool around in. It had a back seat for Gus, so off we went to the outlet mall. They told us to come back around 3:30 or so. My car did not have any kind of towing setup, so they had to do a lot of electrical work. So, we went back...and they still weren't done. I think they finally finished around 5:30 and were ready to actually hitch the trailer up to the car. It was a very exciting moment...

And they had the wrong size ball on the hitch. It took some doing, but they finally convinced themselves that yes, the hitch ball was too big and they got the right size. Now, the trailer was hitched up! But the hitch wasn't paid for and convincing someone to take my money took some doing. I should have driven away with a free hitch, but I'm too nice for that.

On the road! Yay! John is driving and we get about a mile down the freeway and John looks in the side veiw mirror and says, "Oh fuck." AND THEN NOTHING ELSE! Hello? You're towing something for the first time, we're both nervous as hell so you don't get to say "Oh, fuck" and then nothing else. It turns out that there is a black rubber trim that covers a metal seam and screws. And this has come out of the channel on one side and is flopping all over the freeway. Not cool.

We get off at the next exit and pull into an empty parking lot and assess the damage. I call the RV place and tell them what happened. They're like, "Well, you can just snatch that off if you want to," and I proceed to tell them that I've been able to get one mile down the freeway and I want someone from there to come and fix this now. I don't want to take if off and have to drive back two hours at a later date and fix it. I'm hot, I'm tired, I want to go home and whoever comes had better bring a ladder. Walter, bless him, brought a ladder and silicon caulking and stuck it down good.

Finally we were able to start home. I was totally bummed that we weren't going to be able to make it home in time to go to [info]brittadotcom's backyard s'mores party. We finally got home a little after 10 pm and Ben said pretty much everyone had left. We were exhausted and pretty much just went to bed. I can't wait to actually go camping in it. We are going to try for an overnighter after Gus's neurology appointment in Berkeley at 9 am Saturday the 25th. Wish us luck!

Business [Aug. 10th, 2006|12:38 am]
[mood | mellow]

Hello! Sorry I haven't been around much. Things have been extremely crazy at work and home and it looks like things will continue to be crazy for a few more weeks. Vaction in NYC was awesome, but the weeks leading up to it were quite hellish. Thanks so much to [info]harrysmom for hanging out with us and taking us cool places like "The Diner", Coney Island and Patsy's. Ah, my first drunk! I'll cherish it forever!

Along with working in a coal mine I've been doing a lot of reading. I haven't updated my book list in a long time. Let's see if I can do it from memory.
•Lamb by Christopher Moore
•X3 Novelization by Chris Claremont
•Superman Returns novelization by Marv Wolfman
•Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
•Marley and Me by John Grogan
•Stardust by Neil Gaiman
•Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
•American Gods by Neil Gaiman
•Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
•Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher
I'm sure there are a few more I'm forgetting.

I've got quite a few books around the house and I like passing ones I've enjoyed on to others who might also enjoy them, but I've found that I can't quite get rid of enough books that way. I saw a link to a place online called "Bookins" where you register your books to trade and put other books on a wishlist. Each book has a point value and all that. I've already sent off seven of my own books and gotten four in return. If you decide to sign up for it, use my mac.com email address as a reference and I'll get free points. :)

In other Jen news, my father in law passed away from cancer (multiple myeloma) at the beginning of June. It's been really rough on my mother in law, but she has a pretty good support system in LA and John is trying to visit at least once a month and she's going to a grief group. They were married over fifty years and seeing her go through the loss was really tough. Last year, when John's dad was diagnosed, I bought 100 "Livestrong" bracelets and put them in the plastic holder thing outside my office door for people to take along with a sign about John's dad. In the course of a year, I'd given away all but one and coming back to work after the funeral, I took the last bracelet and the sign down. It felt kind of weird.

My Gus is going through a bit of a hard time at the moment. He's got something causing him pain in his back between his shoulder blades. He's been on meds and does well on them, but he's only seven and I'm not looking forward to keeping him hopped up on pain meds for the rest of his life. So, in a couple of Saturdays he has an appointment with a veterinary neurologist up in Berkeley to see what's the dilly-o.

A cool thing--this coming Saturday we finally get our teardrop trailer. Just in time for gas to go up even more! Woo hoo!

Anyway, that's what I've got going on. How about you?

Wow! [Aug. 2nd, 2006|10:29 pm]
[Current Location |Apple Store Fifth Avenue]
[mood | giddy]
[music |Man on the Moon--REM]

Wow. What a day! Aymee, John and I just got done with the Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp and it was fantastic! First off, Radio City Music Hall is an AMAZING theater and if you have an opportunity to go to a show there, take it! We had a very full day at Coney Island followed by chilling at the hotel and then dinner at Patsy's. Patsy's is an awesome family-owned Italian restaurant and hey, Aymee knows the family! We were totally greeted by the owner and head chef, Sal (who is the best friend of Aymee's ex-boyfriend) and he made sure that John's dinner had no dairy products and even sent out cookies and mini biscotti John could have while Aymee and I enjoyed dairy-enriched desserts. The food was absolutely delicious. And guess what? I even got a little tipsy! Off of the dessert!

Afterwards was the reading. Stephen King read from the pie-eating contest portion of Stand By Me and John Irving read from the Christmas pageant part of A Prayer For Owen Meany. Whoopie Goldberg was sort fo the emcee and Tim Robbins introduced Stephen King. Stanley Tucci introduced John Irving and Kathy Bates introduced JK Rowling. She read from the bit where DD visits TR in the orphanage. There's nothing like listening to something being read by the person that wrote it. John Irving cracked himself up at one point.

JKR looked very smart in a nice black dress and gold open-toed heels with snakes on them. She did a shorter reading than the other two and answered three questions solo. One of the questions was asked by Salman Rushdie. She did not really drop any hints about book seven and didn't answer two questions on the grounds that it would give away book 7. She did say that Dumbledore, "isn't going to do a Gandalf," and mentioned the site www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com, saying that they would be very upset because DD is indeed dead.

At the end, all three authors were asked questions and Soledad O'Brien from CNN asked the last question--which five characters would you like to have dinner with. JKR said Harry, Ron and Hermione of course and then she also threw in DD w/another comment (drawing her finger across her throat) that he was indeed dead and then she said Hagrid and I thought she got a bit choked up about it. So me and Aymme think he's for the chop.

So immediately afterward we walked down to the Apple store here in Manhattan to do LJ posts. GEEKS!
